No ho-hum for this boxed lunch

Ok, I know I sometimes overdo it with taking pictures of my food. Why would I take a picture of an ordinary catered boxed lunch? Because this one was spectacular. A chicken Caesar wrap in a spinach tortilla, pretzels, an awesome pasta salad with lots of veggies and shredded cheese that I really want a serving of right now! and a frosted brownie for dessert.

It's what was served at the Hearts at Home Conference that my sister and I attended in March. You know it was good if I'm still thinking about it two months later!

Try a fantastic flight at Greenbush Brewery

On a recent day trip to Three Oaks, Michigan, we ran into a business owner who we usually stop to talk to when we are in town. He asked if we'd ever been to Greenbush Brewery and sent us down the road to Sawyer, Michigan where this tiny brewery with a big beer selection sits in this tiny town. Totally worth the trip if you're up in that area - and even if you're not. It's an hour from my south suburban home. This is what is waiting for you.


There's not a big food menu, but some basic sandwiches and appetizers that sounded great. We didn't eat there as my in-laws were along for the ride and had planned on lunch at a place in Three Oaks. So, we pre-gamed at Greenbush then went back down the road for a Reuben at Nelson's and to pick up some meats and mustard at Drier's Meat Market.


Here's an interior shot. They're just a few minutes from Lake Michigan, so plan on a trip out to the beach at New Buffalo and a stop for some brew. You won't be disappointed.


Outdoor bruchetta

I very much move my kitchen out to the back yard on a lovely spring or summer day. The other day, as the steaks and chicken were cooking on the grill and everyone was very hungry, I whipped up a quick snack to tide us over. I placed some large slices of Italian bread on the grill to toast them. In a bowl I mixed up:

1 can of diced tomatoes
About 2 tbsps of olive oil
About 1 1/2 tbsp of garlic (from a jar of minced garlic in my fridge)
About 1 tsp Italian seasoning
A few leaves of chopped fresh basil

I stirred it quickly and by the time I was done, the bread was toasted and we had a nice little appetizer as we waited for the entree to finish. Of course, fresh tomatoes and garlic make it even better, but I had to move quick, since dinner was already cooking and I had a table full of hungry ones clamoring for some grub. Sometimes shortcuts are the way to go and in this case the shortcut was delicious.

How do you top your dog?

Back in college, I worked three jobs. One was at my brother-in-law's hot dog stand, where hot dogs were made "Chicago-style." There was no ketchup. Mustard went on first, then tomato wedges and diced onions and cucumbers which we had sliced and partially peeled to give the appearance of stripes on the sides. If desired, hot or sweet peppers topped that and then celery salt was sprinkled on top. I still love to throw a little celery salt on top.

My son had some buddies over recently and we had made burgers, bratwurst and hot dogs. He topped his with ketchup, mustard and grilled onions and mushrooms. Interesting. What do you put on yours?

The birthday cake from Portal

My son turned 13 the other day. That makes two teenagers in the house. I think once they get past the age of say, 10, when the Chuck E. Cheese and bowling alley parties tend to go by the wayside, it's even more important to make them feel special. I've always made a big deal about birthdays. OMG...for my oldest son's first birthday, I'd rented a helium tank and the house was filled with balloons. We had a couple cakes. Tons of food. Games. Goodie bags. Rented a bounce house. Had a pinata. All for a party that he pretty much slept through since he was still taking a three hour afternoon nap.

When he turned 4, Toy Story was big. In addition to all of the above, I had a big banner made with Woody and Buzz on it and had a cowboy come and do rope tricks. I've gone a little overboard when they are little. Once they get to junior high, birthday parties with the buddies seem to fade away. So, as they get bigger I try to still do things to make them feel special and know that their birthday is an important event.

The birthday boy had put in a request months ago for a "Portal Cake" for his birthday. For those who don't spend time with teenage boys and aren't in the know - Portal is a video game and I guess there's a cake that you are trying to get to. That's what he wanted. He led me to this site for instruction on how to make it:

I admit, I cheated. I used a box mix. I'm sure it would be even better made from scratch.

So, here's what I did, taking a look at a few of the cakes I'd found online.

1) Bake a chocolate devils food cake mix in two 9-inch round pans as directed.

2) Place first layer on over sized platter. Spread a layer of chocolate pudding on top. Add second cake. I put mine upside down to leave a flat surface on top.

3) Frost top and sides with chocolate frosting (I cheated again and bought pre-made frosting.)

4) Press slivered almonds into side of cake all the way around.


5. Press chocolate chips into top of cake.

6. Add 6 to 8 dollops of whipped cream. 

7. Put maraschino cherries in strainer and rinse with cold water.

8. Place a cherry into each dollop of whipped cream.


9. Add a single candle in the middle to complete the "Portal" look.



The birthday boy was so pleased with his cake that when he first saw it, I put my hand up in the air for a high-five and instead I got a big hug. Those are sometimes hard to come by from teenage boys.  :)


And...I had made two boxed cake mixes because I wasn't sure one would be enough, so the leftover batter went into a foil brownie pan. My son is also a huge fan of Chuck Norris. BIG TIME! He idolizes the guy. So, his big brother printed this off and added it onto the cake for him. So, he got two cool cakes out of the deal.







Famous Dave's - Finger Lickin' Good

Recently I went down to Bloomington, IL to visit with my three sisters and attend a seminar with one of them at the ISU campus. Our first night there, we were tried to decide where to eat. None of us were up for a huge meal, so we decided on Famous Dave's in Bloomington where we got a couple combo platters so we could each do some sampling. We tried ribs, pulled pork, brisket and catfish along with sides of garlic red-skinned mashed potatoes and drunkin' apples. I was pleased with everything and appreciated the assortment of sauces.

Prior to the visit, I'd only had Famous Dave's at Ribfest, so this was my first time at a Famous Dave's Restaurant....and I ended up at one that was two hours from home. Luckily, there are several in the Chicago-area for when a barbecue craving hits. Vietnamese Coconut Candy

Over the years, my sister has had several foreign exchange students. Most have been from Asian countries and it's always such a pleasure to get to know them. It's also fun when they bring you some tastes from home. This was some coconut candy brought from her Vietnamese student. One of my son's really liked it. The other was putting a few pieces in his lunch each day after he told me he didn't care for it. Turned out his classmates did like it and he was bringing it for them. It's so nice to get a taste of other parts of the world through their visits, both figuratively and literally.


Outdoor eating at its best

It's not even officially summer, but we've already done our share of outdoor cooking. Each year, I try more and more new food on the grill. But, how can you beat a grilled burger? It's basic and beautiful! Here's how I like mine - smothered in cheese and topped with mayo, pickles, tomato and lettuce. Chips and a corn/bean mix are on the side along with some veggies that were prepared on the grill in a foil packet - zucchini, eggplant, red pepper and mushroom with a little butter and seasonings. I could eat this almost every night once summer comes.

Popcorn, Indiana - Cheesy is good

Popcorn is one of my favorite snacks. I eat it most often popped at home in the hot air popper and try as I might to use minimal butter and salt, I sooo prefer to have a big bucket slathered in melted butter and generously salted.

Once I tried out Popcorn, Indiana, I was hooked. I love the kettle corn variety and the aged white cheddar popcorn is incredible. I'm also quite fond of the bacon ranch flavor. 'Tis a bit on the pricey side, but I keep an eye for sales at Walgreen's and then I grab a couple bags. And then I hide it...and I bring it out only after everyone has drifted off to sleep. 

I am a little confused by the name, though. I see there really is a town called Popcorn, Indiana. According to Wikipedia, it's an unicorporated community in Lawrence County. But, on the packaging, it shows that it's distributed from New Jersey and on the website, there is a mailing address in Englewood, New Jersey. So, I'm just curious about where the Popcorn, Indiana name comes in. Can anyone answer that question for this inquiring mind that wants to know? :)

Beer and beyond at LaGrange's Palmer Place


In a place that boasts around 300 beer options with an ever changing menu, it's likely that more customers go to Palmer Place Restaurant and Biergarten with ale and stout on the brain than burgers and such. However, the food menu is not to be overlooked. It's a friendly, casual place where you can enjoy a flight from 38 beers on tap, but also feel like as much effort is put into the dining menu as the beer list.

An extensive variety of selections can be found, with a full page dedicated to burgers, including an ostrich burger and The Ultimate Gourmet Burger (a $14.50 offering.) Soups, salads, creative sandwiches and charbroiled steaks and seafood round out the food options.

I opted for an appetizer of fried green tomatoes, served with marinara and wasabi ranch (woah, did that have a kick to it!) Great starter to enjoy with a flight to wash it down.

I ordered a triple decker turkey club. You can never go wrong with that. This one was definitely better than most. Everything seems to be served in generous portions.


I had to give hubby's entree a try - the Grilled Salmon Caesar. One bit and I immediately wished I'd ordered it. Ok, I admit, I had more than one bite.


And being the Cubs afficianado that I am, I appreciated the baseball memorabilia that lined the walls, especially all the Cubs related stuff in the little corner we were in, including this poster for game one of the 1932 World Series at Wrigley Field vs. the Yankees.

Wrigley Field's barbecue pork sandwich

I'm a big time Cubs fan and attend a few games each year. At my most recent game, one of my fellow Cubs fans who attended the game with me ordered this - a barbecue pulled pork sandwich. She gave it a thumbs up and it was big enough that she and her dad split it. I think the price tag was about $8, so it's a good thing it was satisfying. I didn't give it a try, but it sure looked good and was served with a little side of slaw. The food options at Wrigley Field have improved over the years. You still can't go wrong with a good old hot dog. One of these days I'll be brave enough to try the bison dogs that have been served there the past couple years since the Ricketts family (who own High Plains Bison) took over.


Let me just give you a little background on what led me to this game. Here's who I was with - my dad, my friend, Celia, and her Dad. I met Celia a few years ago by mail. I'd gotten her name when my son and I were sending out care package to random Army soldiers. After sending some packages, we kept in touch via e-mail and I learned that Celia was also a Cubs fan. Once she returned home from a deployment to Afghanistan, I offered to get her tickets to a game. When the season started last year, I got in touch with her to let her know that my sister, who is a season-ticket holder, offered to give me a set of tickets to pass on to her. She asked if I'd be able to go to the game so that we could meet face-to-face. So, I asked my sister if she could get us a couple more tickets. Celia and her son attended and I went with my then 9-year-old. It was great to meet her face to face. It was their first game. This year, when I checked to see if she'd want to go again, she said she'd like to take her dad, who had never been to a game. So, looks like this may be an annual thing. :) It sure is fun. Good company, good food. And it was an exciting game with back-to-back home runs. And the Cubs even won.

Salmon satisfies seven

There are seven people in our household. Me, my husband and our five sons, ages 18, 13, 10, 8 and 7. While the picky nature of a couple of them has improved some, it's really hard to put an entree on the table that every single person is completely in love with. All but one like tacos. All but one like hot dogs. Two aren't fond of shrimp. The kids all like pasta, but it's not my favorite. One doesn't like hamburgers. What does everyone like? I think I could count them on one hand. Yes, I know I could:

1) Pork
2) Chicken
3) Steak
and of course, 4) pizza -- but the family is split. Two boys like pepperoni, three like sausage, my husband and I like veggies on ours.
and lastly, 5) salmon.

It makes me happy that all of them enjoy salmon. I'd much rather feed them salmon than fish sticks or breaded fish (even if it costs quite a bit more.) The easiest route to go with salmon is to order the grilled salmon filets I love from Market Day or the seasoned salmon, both of which are individually wrapped. Throw some rice or mixed veggies with it and you've got an easy and healthy meal. I put the salmon in a foil packet with lemon slices on top and put them on the grill and in minutes they're ready to go.

Summer on a bun

We do a lot of outdoor cooking in the summer months. When we were newly married, it was pretty much hot dogs and hamburgers. Over the years, we've evolved to doing veggie blends on the grill, chicken, pork, steaks, shish kabobs, corn on the cob, pizzas, fish. My husband even likes to do breakfast on the grill - pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage in his cast iron pans.

A favorite grill food of mine is bratwurst. There are few things that scream SUMMER like a grilled bratwurst. There are several toppings that can make their way on to brats - among them sauerkraut, onions, grilled peppers, tomatoes or cheese. I prefer mine on a toasted bun with a smear of spicy mustard. This one has mustard from Drier's Meat Market in Three Oaks, Michigan. We head up to that area several times a year and I always pick up a jar of mustard when I'm there. It's the perfect accompaniment to a grilled brat -- or as I like to call it -- Summer on a bun!

Howard's own seasoning blend gives a zip to steaks

Ok, I love my veggies. I love them a lot. I can't really think of a veggie that I won't eat. However, I could never become a vegetarian. I just love meat too much. I especially love steak too much. During the summer, my husband is usually on grill duty and he does it quite well. Sometimes he marinates the meats in advance, but most of the time they simply go on the grill with a bit of seasoning.

Ever since I tried the seasoning blend from Howard's Meats in Munster, it has become my favorite. It's their own blend, sold in little plastic cups with lids -- like the kind you'd get your sour cream in with a carry out meal. The blend is wonderful! It helps to bring out the natural flavor of the steak without over-powering it. If you happen to be in Northwest Indiana, swing by Howard's for some of their secret spice.

Cookie time

I'm not a big cookie person. I love a good Oreo now and then or something warm and chocolaty, but for the most part, I'd much rather have a good salad or a chunk of warm, crusty bread over a cookie. My oldest son started working at a Subway this past spring and once in a while, he'll bring me a cookie or two after work. A few nights ago, he brought this home:
The top one looks like chocolate chip - I can't quite remember. On the bottom is a raspberry cheesecake and a peanut butter. I do like peanut butter, especially when I make them at Christmas and place a Hershey kiss on top. Subway's peanut butter cookies are pretty good, I must admit. Then I tried the raspberry cheesecake and I was wowed! It's not available at all the stores, but I'm glad they have it at one nearby. My son can bring me home one of those cookies anytime. :)

Fresh flavors abound at Seasons 52

Last weekend the Chicago Foodie Sisters attended a media lunch at the new Oakbook Center location of Seasons 52. This will be the 23rd location for Seasons 52, which originated in Florida and has one other Chicagoland location in Schaumburg. Describing itself as a "casually sophisticated fresh grill and wine bar," the staff incorporate seasonal produce and organic meats into wonderful presentations with private dining and a chef's table available. There's so much to say about Seasons 52, that we'll spread it out into several posts. 

Our visit began with two flatbreads, Artichoke and Goat Cheese and Chipotle Shrimp varieties, both of which were bursting with flavor on a crispy flatbread. Next was the amuse of Lump Crab and Haas Avocado (pictured below) paired with Aveleda Vinho Verde.


The Frank-Lloyd Wright inspired design with Honduran mahogany is breathtaking. This Monday, May 21, is the first opportunity for the public to get a taste. More postings to come on Seasons 52.






A foodie souvenir

I love when I get foodie souvenirs when a family member goes on a trip. My sis picked this up in Hungary and passed it on to me. Looking forward to using it in some dishes soon. First that comes to mind is deviled eggs. This will be great sprinkled on top, I'm sure.

Labriola Pretzel Bread - A+


I've fallen head over heels for Labriola Bakery items. I'm looking forward to our local farmer's market starting because they've always got a table there with muffins and cookies and delicious breads, like foccacia and the pretzel rolls pictured below. I was also glad to discover that Foodies MarketCafe in Dyer and Jansma's Farm Market in Lansing carry some Labriola items, as well. Have you tried Labriola? What's your favorite item?

Trying out a classic from the grocery store - Jimboos

Ask a suburban south sider about good Italian Beef and the name Jimbooo's will likely come up. I've had my share of tasty sandwiches from their South Holland location and at local events catered by Jimbooo's. Everything else on the menu is quite awesome, but it's the Italian Beef that takes the cake. I was pleased recently to see this tub of frozen beef at Strack and Van Til in Munster (IN.) I'm looking forward to trying it out and seeing how it compares to the real thing. Have you tried it? What did you think?

Milk or dark?

I'm a chocoholic. How about you? Everyone in my family knows how much I love chocolate. My 12-year-old probably loves it more than I do. And it's because of him that I have to hide it in various places in the cabinet in the pantry because once he spots it, it's gone.

I've never been real big on dark chocolate, but you see it much more in candy sections now. If it's coating something, like nuts or cream or caramel, I don't much notice that it's dark. So, bless his little heart - my oldest son went and bought me two big plain, VERY dark chocolate bars for Mother's Day. He meant well and it's the thought that counts. And although it's not my favorite, I was willing to take one for the team and force myself to eat it. :) What's your favorite chocolate treat?

Reminds me of Pocky


For several years, my sister has hosted foreign exchange students and many of them came from Asian countries. One great thing about meeting so many foreign visitors is that you often get to sample some of the snacks they bring from back home. This is how I fell in love with Royce Chocolates and Tim Tams.

One of the treats we loved that were brought by a girl from Japan were Pocky Sticks. They were light little biscuits partly dipped in chocolate. Yesterday I was in Target and came across these in their dollar bins at the front of the store. It had those light little biscuits and then had a chocolate hazelnut creme (basically a Nutella knock-off) for dipping. It's called Yan Yan and is manufactured in Singapore by Meiji Seika. If you happen to see some, grab them up. They are tasty! :)

Steak and eggs


The past couple weeks my husband had several days off work and it's been nice to spend some extra time together. On Thursday, I was in the cast of a show called  Listen To Your Mother at the Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso, Indiana, produced and directed by Stephanie Precourt. The show featured 14 women sharing stories on motherhood, each reading an original piece. 

I made sure I had nothing on the calendar that day except going for a manicure. Hubby offered to make lunch. Eggs are his specialty...he makes a mean omelet or skillet. So, steak and eggs it was, both made outside on the grill. He's proud that he's finally figuring out the hot spots on the grill to get the steaks just the right amount of pink in the middle.

So, lunch was great and the show was a huge success. It sold out! :)

Seasons 52 to open May 21

This afternoon both of us foodie sisters enjoyed a preview of the new Seasons 52 location in Oak Brook that will open May 21 to the public. We were some of the first to get a sneak peak and sample the menu items. We enjoyed the visit and were impressed by the food, service, decor and atmosphere. A tasty toasty snack

So, my favorite snack as of late is very easy and WAY better than potato chips or cookies. I buy the big loaves of Turano Italian Bread. One large slice goes in the oven for about 5 minutes at 350 degrees to toast it. Then I spread goat cheese on top. That's yummy enough on it's own, but I saw this Sun Dried Tomato Pesto at Aldi on my last trip and thought it would be great on top. And it is.

Blizzards are a perfect warm weather treat

I like to think that I do not spoil my kids. I try to teach them to work for what they get. I don't buy them toys or other items regularly - they wait for holidays and birthdays. If there's something special they want, they save up for it. But...I admit that there's one area when I do "spoil" them, if you'd call it that. There's a Dairy Queen on the way to the doctor's office and we almost never leave the doctor without an ice cream treat afterwards. This week it was time for some yearly check-ups. And a Midnight Truffle blizzard. :)

Palmer Place offers huge beer selection


My husband and father-in-law stopped for lunch last week at the Palmer Place Restaurant and Biergarten in LaGrange. My father-in-law had done his homework. They were headed to a trade show and he wanted to find a lunch spot to stop at on the way home. This is the place he picked -- with over 300 bottled beers from around the world and about three dozen on tap.

After my hint that it was time to take me to lunch, too, my husband I returned the following day for lunch. Here's the sample paddle he got. I'm not that big on beer. The first one was Blue Moon Belgium White Ale. Blue Moon is one of my favorites -- always with a wedge of orange in it. The one on the left was really good -- Samuel Adams Twisted Tea. I love places where you have an opportunity to try small amounts of several beers and this is a great place to try out a few. Oh, and the food was pretty awesome, too. I'll get to that in an upcoming post. The large building is located in the business district just down the street from the Metra stop and next to the historic district. Reserve a little time for a walk through town while you're there. Lots of great little shops, a theatre and many more eateries. I popped in Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for some dessert. That's also coming in a later post.

Make enough lemon pepper chicken for leftovers





Sometimes the simple things are the best. I love chicken on the grill in the spring and summer. These breasts were marinated overnight in Lawry's Lemon Pepper Marinade. They were great for dinner that night with veggies and mashed potatoes. And the next day cut up and added to some lettuce and tomatoes for a lunchtime salad. The next day, one was sliced in half lengthwise and placed on hamburger buns with mayo and lettuce for lunch. The final one was sliced and made into a panini that was really, really good! I'll post a photo of that soon.

Golden Corral good option for buffet meal


Some people like buffets. Some don't. I know people who absolutely refuse to eat at buffets because other hands come into contact with the utensils. I'm cautious, but not paranoid. If I see a kid at a buffet stick his fingers in something, I'm not going to eat it. But, in reality, you never know who is touching your food in the back of a restaurant. You never know how many hands an item has gone through before you purchase it at the grocery store. For the most part, restaurants that serve buffets are diligent about keeping things clean and well-stocked.

I like buffets because of the variety. In upscale restaurants that have brunch or lunch buffets, it's a good opportunity to get a taste of several menu items. That can also be a downfall, though. Sometimes there are many mediocre things and not many good things. Buffets are also often a good value if you have big eaters in your family. I have no qualms about trying a buffet as long as the place is clean and a good effort is made to keep dishes at suitable temperature.

On Easter, my hubby was working and I wasn't expecting any company and I decided to take the day off. Although I knew of a few places offering extensive brunch buffets that I would have liked to have gone to, I wasn't willing to pay $16 per child/$28 per adult because I was taking five children. That's a bit pricey for one meal out. If I wanted to spend that much I'd go to a nice Japanese steakhouse or seafood restaurant. But....I also wasn't willing to go it alone in a five star restaurant with five children while hubby was at work. I needed something casual and quick. I couldn't imagine waiting with all of them for a half hour for meals to arrive. I also had a variety of tastes to satisfy, so a buffet seemed perfect. I'd never been to Golden Corral in Schererville, Indiana so we decided to give it a try. I really wasn't expecting too much. I figured it would basically be like Old Country Buffet, lots of bland stuff that the kids would eat, but not much that would wow me.

I was pleasantly surprised. The steak station had beautiful looking cuts, cooked to order (the website shows that steak is available for dinner only, so this may have been a special offer for Easter.) I made a couple trips as did three of the boys. I figured that justified the buffet price even if we didn't eat anything else. It was $6.99 for the younger kids. Adults (which includes kids over age 12) were $11.69, plus an additional $2.09 for soft drinks. Kid meals included drinks.

Most restaurants I take my kids to have kid meals for $5 or under (chicken tenders is usually the meal of choice), which usually includes a drink or we'll take them on a night when kids are free with an adult purchase. So, $7 for a kid to eat is more than I'd usually spend. At least when steak is an option, I feel a little more like I'm getting my money's worth. The kids also dug into pizza, potatoes, corn on the cob, macaroni and cheese and a few other items.

Shrimp was another option, which they cook to order along with pasta and a variety of sauces. It was well-cooked and comparable to what I'd get in a casual Italian eatery. That was another plus. I admit, I didn't eat much else. A few veggies, which were nothing to rave about. Salad bar has the standard fare. The kids loved the dessert table with a chocolate fountain to dip cookies and marshmallows in as well as soft serve ice cream.

I would definitely go back. The place was constantly being cleaned and filled and staff was very friendly, even with the busy holiday lunch rush. I can go and feel I'm getting a worthwhile meal of steak, seafood and pasta and the kids are free to choose among dishes they like and get their fill of their favorites. And when dining with kids, the less wait time for the food, the better. We had about a two minute wait in line to get in and then we were free to eat. Chocolate is good. Pound cake is good. Chocolate covered pound cake is really good.

Picked this up at Aldi last weekend. On clearance for $1.99. I had to try it. Didn't expect too much from a pre-packaged cake, but it was outstanding...really moist and covered in a thin layer of rich chocolate. I would soooo buy this again. I hope I am able to find it again. Since it was on clearance, I'm thinking it may not be there long. That's a tragedy!

Oh, and by the way, they also had a lemon variety that was also covered in chocolate and it was just as awesome!

Breakfast Man

Our house is a bit old-fashioned. I usually stay out of the garage. My husband usually stays out of the kitchen. Unless it's breakfast time. I have no qualms with handing over the kitchen to my hubby for a morning meal. Honestly, he does breakfast better than I do. So, why fight it? I enjoy being along for the ride, especially when he makes my favorite breakfast...scrambled eggs with some meat and veggies and cheese. :)
